hydrophonicsHydroponics is the method of growing plants without any earth and it has become quite popular in recent years.

The key is to ensure that the plants get nutrients in alternative ways to good old fashioned earth.

Although it sounds pretty crazy and well pretty impossible, it does actually work meaning that without the availability of earth, and for some people the mess which goes with it, growing plants is possible.

The system works by feeding the plants, the nutrients that usually come from the earth directly to the roots, by dipping them in a solution containing small amounts of zinc, copper, calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron.

Instead of a solution this can be done by using a combination of gravel and a wool made of minerals.

Earth, by its nature must be kept watered, if it dries out all the valuable nutrients are lost and cannot be replaced very easily. There are many countries in the world that do not have access to water for their population least of all for their crops etc.

There is also the advantage that the earth does not need to be maintained by digging, so growing crops is much less labor intensive. Also in desert regions, where previously nothing could possibly ever grow there, can now produce varied crops and produce food for the local population.

So hydroponics gardening is truly a global phenomenon which is making a big difference to people’s lives all around the world. Ultimately it is saving lives, which is truly remarkable.
